Changing Flooring Register Size
I am looking for data on changing out a floor register. I live in a tri-level house from the 70'southward. On my principal floor there are 5 floor registers that are fourteen"x2". We just found out that the last owners covered up one of the vents with carpet. So I went looking for a floor register and found out that 14x2 is an odd size and that most stores don't carry the size permit alone the colour(dark brown). I have access to all of the duct work in my crawl space and we were thinking of replacing the flooring. So I idea most replacing the annals duct boot with a more than mutual size. A friend with the same house has four"x10" on his main floor(14x2 everywhere else). My question is if it is okay to make this size change to iv"x10"? Seems that going from a 28 sq in register to a 40 sq in register might cause problems. Am I just overthinking it? If this is a bad idea, what size would be recommended? Or what other options exercise I have? Then far I havent been able to come across whatsoever answers (google, local HVAC). Thanks all for your time and assistance.

Dont know if it matters but I have a Ruud Silhouette 2 furnace with 5" ducts.

2x14 register should non be that difficult to find, perhaps non in teh big box stores simply HVAC shops should be alble to get you one.
Every bit far as the change of size, you will non get the throw out of the annals that you get out of the smaller one. Your five" piping has a area of near 22" the 2x14 has a costless area of nearly 20 and the 4x10 is abut 27. So the velocity on the 4x10 will exist less than the 2x14 and may not mix the air in the room s well. frequently times this is non a problem on heating but does affect cooling.

You lot shouldn't have any trouble finding 2x14'south.

Cheers. And then far the 2 HVAC stores in Colorado Springs I chosen don't have any. Large box has white and tan simply no night chocolate-brown. Guess I will just have to swap them all out.

Is possible duct piece of work, from the 70's may have issues & may not be correctly sized. Something to think about before you put in new floor

Doug,
The room heats evenly. I am interested to see what happens when I open upwardly the covered register. What is the best mode to tell if it is not correctly sized? I just want to brand sure I am going about this the correct way. Ultimately I even so would like a more than common sized register since the ones I want are special order(ii weeks) and if I do hardwood I would like to use flush woods registers. And so like y'all said I need to make a decision earlier doing the floors. Cheers over again to everyone.

If you want affluent forest registers go with the 4x10 , wood registers are much more than restrictive than what I quoted above.
As far as the proper fashion to know what yous need, a room x room load calc will tell you lot what y'all need for each room then y'all adjust appropriately. You volition find out that some rooms take to much air while others are short.

BNME8EZ - Thanks again for all the help and sorry for all of the questions. So you lot think if I put in 4x10 (as long as information technology is with wood) that I wouldn't mess the system up too much? Is it just a situation where if information technology doesn't estrus the firm evenly, with 4x10s, I should just shut the dampers slightly on 4x10s and it would work fine? Cheers so much.
Oh, I reread your mail service before and I exercise not accept A/C. Just heat. Sad, I should've mentioned/noticed information technology earlier.
